Slot is a term used to describe the wide receiver position. Often seen in the NFL, this position allows the quarterback to stretch out the offense and attack all three levels of the defense.
Roles & Routes
Slot receivers typically run short passes behind the line of scrimmage. They also catch a lot of passes up, in and out of the formation. They need to be fast, have good hands and be precise with their routes and timing.
They must have good chemistry with the quarterback. This is important since they will be in the same zone as the QB, so it’s imperative that they are able to communicate with each other effectively.
Running Back – They are a great option for running backs because they can run in the open field quickly, and they are also capable of providing blockers on outside runs. They can also pick up blitzes from linebackers and secondary players, which gives the RB extra space.
Blocker – Slot receivers can also be used as a blocker for running backs and wideouts. This is because they are already in motion and they have a full head of steam behind them, so they can move faster than a regular player.
When playing slots, be sure to choose a game with a variance that matches your goal. A low variance means that you have a higher chance of winning but will win smaller amounts; a high variance game means that you are less likely to win but will win larger amounts.
